Heat relief at SVdP's Resource Center

Heat relief services across the Valley

SVdP's heat relief services and cooling stations will open June 1 - Sept. 30

SVdP’s heat relief operations will be in full swing by June 1, running through Sept. 30, as Arizona’s dangerous summer temperatures continue to threaten the lives of vulnerable individuals and families across the Valley.

Throughout the summer, SVdP provides safe, cool spaces for people to rest and recover from extreme heat, along with drinking water, meals, basic summer survival supplies, and rent and utility assistance to help keep families safe during the hottest months of the year. Heat relief operations also include an emergency overnight heat relief shelter inside SVdP’s Phoenix Dining Room on the Key Campus. SVdP’s other 24/7 heat relief shelter and housing program located at 28th Street and Washington is available by agency referral only.

About SVdP's Water Truck

In addition to indoor heat relief locations, SVdP will operate water trucks throughout the Valley this summer, conducting responsive outreach focused on delivering lifesaving services to individuals living on the street who may not have access to heat relief centers.

Once temperatures begin to rise, the water trucks swing into action loading pallets of water, bottles of water, ice, and supplies for pets in need. Outreach efforts focus on high-risk areas including encampments, mobile home communities, BLM and Trust Lands, and other locations where people are especially vulnerable to extreme heat.

During the hottest months, SVdP’s water trucks distribute an average of 400 bottles of water and 75 pounds of ice each day while also providing hats, cooling towels, sunscreen, sunglasses, and other essential summer survival supplies to help people stay hydrated and safe.

The Reality of Extreme Heat

According to the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, 430 confirmed heat-related deaths were recorded in 2025, with  49%  involving individuals experiencing homelessness.

While heat-related deaths decreased from 608 in 2024 to 430 in 2025 by 178 fewer lives lost, 430 deaths is still far too many. Every number represents a person, and even one heat-related death is one too many.

Equally concerning are families behind on bills being forced onto the streets mid-summer when the heat is life-threatening. Low-income families already face typical summer challenges with higher utility bills, increased childcare costs and limited access to school food programs.

By staying engaged and supporting SVdP’s 100 Days of Summer campaign, a seasonal effort focused on securing water, food, and shelter for neighbors most at risk during Arizona’s hottest season, the community can help SVdP respond to increased summer needs. Every contribution helps provide lifesaving support and critical resources to those most vulnerable during Arizona’s extreme heat.
